Restorative Yoga classes offer students the time and space to relax much more deeply than a regular class. Themes may include chest openers, gentle backbends, soothing forward bends, or sequences designed to relieve jet lag, bolster immunity, etc. It is normal to practice relatively few poses, staying in them for quite a long time. To facilitate comfort, we use props such as blankets, yoga straps and bolsters. Eased into a reclined position, held by props and perhaps some soft, soothing music, students shed the energy of everyday life and connect more deeply with their inner Selves.
I like to hold Restorative classes on Friday evenings, as a means of letting go of the work week and easing gracefully into the weekend. I plan the theme for the class, but often change certain aspects depending upon the needs of the students who attend. Sometimes we practice in quiet, other evenings I use soft music. Often I provide a guided meditation or share a reading of poetry or other beautiful, inspirational writing.
Restorative classes are the perfect counterpoint to the "go go go" of daily living. Even those of us who practice yoga regularly must balance a physically demanding practice (which tends to be very Yang) with the peaceful experience of a restorative practice (which is very Yin). Many popular styles of yoga are quite active, and bring a lot of Yang/solar energy into the practitioner. Since for most of us daily life is aggressive enough, it is important to take the time to harmonize and incorporate more nurturing practices into our routines. Even the most dedicated athlete will tell you that slower/easier training days are absolutely critical to prevent burnout and allow the body to recover. The same holds true of a yoga practice.
Reading this entry has me dreaming of a restorative session. Am going to see if I can register now ...
