Halloween is perhaps our favorite holiday. We love the pumpkins, the showy colors of fall, the smell of autumn. Trick-or-treating is almost as much fun as an adult as it was when I was kid - at least (as I found out last night) if you get into the spirit of things:
Check out those tights! Last week I didn't have firm plans to dress up for Halloween. We weren't going to any parties, but since it fell on a Friday this year it seemed a distinct possibility. Then we went to the Costume and Display store to look for decorations. I happened upon the red yarn wig, and that was that! Add stripey tights and a crinoline underskirt to clothes I already own, and a Raggedy Ann was born.
Here's a close-up of my make-up...not bad, if I say so m'self:
Um, and closer:
I worried a bit that the kiddos would be clueless, and I might only be recognized by the adults, but that wasn't the case at all! I received many compliments from the kids and parents alike, even an "Awesome costume" from the tweeny-boppers. Hahahahaha. Parents yelled "I love that you dressed up!" from the sidewalk. It was great fun.
The highlight of the evening, however, was one teeny little tiger. There was a wee knock on the door, and I opened it up to a sweet little guy standing solemnly on our doorstep. Dad was at the bottom of the (four) stairs, smiling encouragingly. Little guy looks up at me, and as I begin to kneel he says "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!" and sticks out his candy bag. Daddy says, "No honey, remember? You say Happy Halloween!" and the little guys says "and HAPPY HALLOWEEN!". Then he takes a candy out of our cauldron, looks up and says "Can I take one for my Daddy, too?" Daddy said "No that's okay, honey, I've had plenty" but I offered him the whole cauldron (at this point, he could have taken one for every person he knows as far as I was concerned). I asked how old he was and he said "I'm two and a half" and did that funny trying to hold up two-to-three fingers thing that really little kids do. He was so sweet, and surprisingly articulate, and I just wanted to pretty much give him anything he asked for. He made it worth leaving our light on.
I hope that you had a happy birthday yesterday, as well. Did you dress up?

Kelly - totally off topic, but I couldn't find your e-mail address easily - I found a pattern I think would suit you so well! We only met once when my friend Kerrie took me to your yoga class, but I've been following your blog and I see how you love to knit socks and wear cute dresses/skirts, and I just thought of you immediately when I saw this pattern: http://nevernotknitting.blogspot.com/2008/10/evening-stockings.html (the pattern isn't actually on the page, but the finished product is, and it makes me want to go out and grab the book with the pattern in it!). Anyway, just thought I'd pass it on to you. Happy Fall! Christina
